“Old King Cole was a merry old soul, and a merry old soul was he…”
…but just how merry is his poker machine, will his Rhyming Reels be good to me?
That’s the question we aim to answer today in our Rhyming Reels Old King Cole pokies review.
Microgaming put out several games in its Rhyming Reels Series, with Old King Cole Pokies being the fourth and final installment in 2012. It’s a 5 reel, 20 payline game, so it’s great for all bankroll sizes. We’ll go over all the in-game features and discuss whether it’s got enough entertainment and win potential for players.

Rhyming Reels Old King Cole Features
Being a 300 year old fairy tale rhyme, I think Microgaming did a great job with the graphics, making it look like an antiquated storybook. Many of the symbols come to animated life when they make a winning combination. As the wild, the jolly king chortles and puffs his hookah pipe, making purple smoke rings. It’s a very cheery theme, indeed.
The symbols are what you would expect, including Old King Cole himself, along with his pipe (hookah), his fiddlers three (each with a very fine…guitar?), and his bowl (of Froot Loops cereal?) as the standard high-paying symbols. As usual, generic playing card values (10-A) make up the lower paying variety.
Obviously Microgaming decided to take a more modern approach to the old nursery rhyme, giving the fiddlers acoustic and electric guitars, upgrading the pipe to a hookah, etc. They also infused it with an old school hip-hop soundtrack, rather than the flute-and-fiddle type Renaissance music you might expect.
The Old King Cole logo is the Wild, but there’s nothing special about it. It can appear on all 5 reels and takes the place of all other standard symbols, but doesn’t stack, expand or multiply winnings. It is the highest paying symbol in the game when 5 appear on an active payline, awarding 2500x the line bet.
The Gold Album is also a wild, similar to the first, but only during free spins. In the base game, it’s the second highest paying symbol, awarding 1000x the line bet for 5 on a line.
The King’s Crown is the Scatter, and awards 12 Free Spins any time 3 or more appear anywhere on the reels. The same number of free spins can be re-triggered during the free games feature. When this feature strikes, a multiplier of up to 7x is randomly selected by the game.
Like all others in the Rhyming Reels Series (and pretty much every other poker machine Microgaming ever created), Old King Cole Pokies employs a Gamble Feature. After any winning spin in the base game, players can choose if they want to gamble their winnings for 2x or 4x the amount.
A playing card is shown face down. Choosing the right color (red or black) is worth 2x the winnings, and the correct suit (club, diamond, heart or spade) is worth 4x. Choose wrong and the winnings are lost.
Rhyming Reels Old King Cole Pokies – Overall
I actually liked this game quite a lot. It’s a medium variance poker machine, but the pays are high enough to keep a bankroll going for quite some time.
Free spins aren’t easy to come by, but I’ve found that the more you bet, the more likely you are to hit them. On the minimum $0.20 per spin, it took an average of about 125 plays to trigger free spins. When increased to a $1 bet ($0.05 per line), the free spins began triggering about every 75-100 spins.
Those free games are where the real money is in Old King Cole pokies, especially if you can trigger them with a multiplier of 5x or more.
With that said, I do recommend Rhyming Reels Old King Cole Pokies, but more so to players who can afford to invest a little more in their game play.
